Changsha’s rising prominence as an industrial, cultural, and tourism hub was underscored during a four‑day business mission by the CCILC Macau Delegation from 15–18 January.
Led by CCILC President Mr. Carlos Cid Alvares, who also serves as CEO of Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU), the mission brought representation of Macau’s business and institutional community. The delegation included Mr. Sam Tou, Ms. Catarina Cottinelli, Mr. Filipe Santos, Ms. Mary Mendoza, Mr. Joao Li, Ms. Echo Chan, and Ms. Kate Leong.
In support of this high‑level initiative, The Platinum Ltd., represented by Managing Director Mary Mendoza, joined senior leadership from CCILC, BNU, Orient Foundation, Perfection Company Ltd., and MECC in a unified effort to deepen economic and institutional ties between Macau and Hunan Province. The visit was supported by the Macao — Changsha Chamber of Commerce, whose leadership continues to strengthen bilateral commercial, cultural, and academic exchanges.
A defining moment of the mission was the formal tribute at Shaoshan, birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong. The delegation marched together to present a floral bouquet at the Chairman Mao Zedong's statue an act symbolizing respect for China’s historical legacy and reaffirming the delegation’s commitment to cross‑regional cooperation. Shaoshan remains one of China’s most visited “red tourism” destinations, receiving tens of millions of domestic visitors annually and serving as a cornerstone of Hunan’s cultural tourism economy.
Reflecting on the visit, Mr. Alvares shared, “We have been profoundly impressed by Changsha’s vibrancy and the remarkable synergy between Hunan’s rapid technological advancement and its deep cultural heritage. The professionalism and vision of our hosts have been exceptional. Special gratitude goes to Mr. Li Hong and Mr. Tommy Zhong of the Macau Changsha Chamber of Commerce for orchestrating such a seamless visit.”
Changsha’s Tourism Momentum: 2025 Performance
Changsha’s tourism sector demonstrated strong resilience and expansion in 2025. According to provincial data, the city welcomed 425,900 inbound tourist trips, a 40.45% year‑on‑year increase, with inbound tourism spending rising 40.07% to USD 335 million. Domestic tourism also surged, supported by Changsha’s reputation as a vibrant cultural destination and a top‑tier city for youth‑driven consumption.
The city ranked 23rd in Asia and 40th globally in Trip.com Group’s 2026 Word‑of‑Mouth Travel Rankings, placing first among all central China cities. Its tourism ecosystem is anchored by cultural landmarks such as Yuelu Academy, one of China’s oldest centers of learning, which continues to attract scholars, cultural tourists, and heritage enthusiasts. Complementary attractions including Orange Isle, the Lei Feng Museum, and the Shaoshan Memorial Complex reinforce Changsha’s position as a destination where history, education, and modern urban culture intersect.
Strategic Cooperation and Industrial Engagement
The Strategic Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CCILC Macau Delegation and the Changsha Federation of Industry and Commerce was signed during a four‑day business and cultural exchange in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province. The programme included meetings with members of the Changsha Municipal Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Hunan Provincial CPPCC, and the Macau Changsha Chamber of Commerce.
The delegation also held discussions with Hunan’s industrial leaders, including Sansure Biotech Inc. and Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Co., Ltd., gaining insights into the region’s innovation ecosystem and its implications for tourism resilience, public‑health readiness, and supply‑chain stability.
On the significance of the new agreement, Mr. Alvares emphasized its long‑term impact:“Our expectations are ambitious. This MoU creates a structured pathway for partnership. Portuguese companies gain a gateway to China’s vast market, while Chinese enterprises can access Portugal’s market, the EU, and over 300 million consumers across PSCs. We are turning dialogue into tangible outcomes for shared prosperity.”
The Platinum Ltd.’s Perspective
For The Platinum Ltd., the mission provided valuable sectoral intelligence relevant to integrated resorts, hospitality development, and tourism strategy across Greater China. As Mendoza noted, “Changsha’s combination of cultural heritage, industrial strength, and rising visitor demand positions it as a market with long‑term strategic potential.”
The mission reinforces Macau’s role as a bridge between China and Portuguese‑speaking countries, while providing actionable insights for tourism and hospitality stakeholders. With Changsha’s continued growth and Hunan’s expanding global engagement, the region is poised to play a larger role in Asia’s evolving tourism landscape—offering new opportunities for collaboration, investment, and cultural exchange.
